A heavy executive sedan like the 5 Series cars wears its bushes, batteries and seals in its own way. A good BMW 5 Series service center that knows the V8, the six-cylinders and the newer four-cylinders will find the right diagnosis, leaving no scope for guesswork.
The N63 twin-turbo V8 in the F10 550i is well known for heavy oil use, most often from valve stem seals hardened by engine heat. Blue smoke after idling is a typical sign. We confirm the cause before quoting.
Timing chain stretch was a known N63 problem, and BMW's Customer Care Package added chain checks for affected engines. A rattle on start-up should be looked at quickly. We measure the chain and review the car's records.
On the N55 six-cylinder, the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket are common leak points as they age. A burning oil smell or oil on the engine are the usual signs. We find the source and reseal it.
Worn front control arm bushings are a frequently reported issue on this heavy sedan. They can bring clunks, uneven tyre wear and less precise steering. We inspect the arms and bushes and replace only what is worn.
Some F10 owners report batteries draining while the car is parked, often traced to a faulty module or an ageing battery. We measure the drain, find what is causing it and register any new battery to the car.
The B48 in the 530i can crack its plastic oil filter housing, and the B58 in the 540i has a known weak coolant vent hose. A low coolant warning often comes first. We pressure test to find the leak.
