On the 5.0 supercharged V8 and the 3.0 supercharged V6, a rattle on cold start is often the timing chain tensioners and guides, a well known weak point on these engines. As they wear, the chain runs slack for a moment until oil pressure builds, which causes the noise, and if it is ignored the chain can eventually skip and cause serious engine damage. It is not one to leave. We inspect the chains, tensioners, and guides, confirm the condition, and replace them with the updated parts, which is far cheaper than the alternative if a chain lets go.

The supercharged V6 and V8 use a belt driven supercharger that makes a certain amount of noise by design, but a rising whine, a rattle, or a bearing type noise usually means the supercharger nose bearing or coupler is wearing, or the belt and tensioner need attention. Caught early it is a manageable repair, but left to fail it can damage the supercharger itself, which is far more costly. We inspect the supercharger and its drive, and repair or rebuild it with the correct parts so it runs quietly and reliably again.

The Ingenium four cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel, are efficient and strong, but the earlier ones in particular can suffer timing chain wear if servicing has been neglected or the oil left too long, so regular oil changes with the correct specification matter more than usual. On the diesels the DPF, EGR, and emissions system also need care, especially with a lot of short trips. We check the timing and the wider engine on the factory system, keep the servicing tight, and put right any fault before it grows, which is the key to a long, reliable life from these engines.

The rotary gear selector that rises into your hand on start up is a lovely piece of theatre when it works, and a nuisance when it does not. When it fails to rise, stays down, or will not select properly, it is usually a fault in the selector module itself or in its wiring and control, sometimes brought on by heat. We diagnose it on the factory system to confirm whether it is the selector, the module, or a related electrical fault, then repair or replace the part and set it up so it rises and shifts as it should again.
