Frequently Asked Questions

The IMS, or intermediate shaft, bearing sits inside certain flat six engines, mainly the M96 and M97 units in the 996 and early 997 911 and the 986 and 987 Boxster and Cayman. On those engines the bearing can wear and, in the worst case, fail, which lets debris into the engine and causes serious damage. Later engines are not affected. If you own one of the earlier cars it is worth having the bearing inspected, and often upgraded to a stronger unit, particularly when the clutch is already off for other work. We can check whether yours is at risk and advise the sensible course.

There are two common causes we see here. On the V8 Cayenne and Panamera the coolant pipes running through the engine valley are plastic and are known to crack and leak with age and heat. On the 911 and Cayman, the front mounted radiators sit low and clog with sand and debris in this climate, which cuts their cooling and can cause overheating in traffic. We pressure test the system to find the leak, replace failed pipes, pumps, or thermostats, and clean or replace the radiators so the car stays cool through the summer.

A puff of blue or white smoke, often on a cold start or when you get on the throttle, is commonly the air oil separator, or AOS, failing and letting oil into the intake. On the older flat six engines it can also point to cylinder bore scoring, which is more serious. Rather than guess, we run the diagnostics, carry out a leak down or borescope inspection where needed, and tell you exactly what is causing it before quoting the repair, whether that is a straightforward AOS replacement or deeper engine work.

Porsche generally calls for a service every twelve months or around 15,000 km, whichever comes first, and the car shows a service reminder. The services alternate between a minor visit and a more thorough intermediate or major service, and a major typically adds items such as spark plugs, extra fluids, filters, and a deeper inspection on top of the usual oil and filter change.
